Phonics Achievement
Children in Year 1 undergo a Phonics Screening Check in June. This check shows how well Year 1 children use phonics skills they have learnt up to the end of the year, to decode words to an appropriate standard.
The check consists of 40 words and nonsense (pseudo) words which are read by the child to the teacher.
The number of words that are read correctly is scored against a National Standard. This standard last year was 32 words out of 40 read correctly.
We are extremely proud of our phonics screening scores which reflect the high priority given to reading at this school. This has been acknowledged in the letter below, from Nick Gibb MP – Minister of State for School Reform.
